A CO2 laser bench

Quick answer

A desktop CO2 bench runs under $1,500. The reason to move from a diode is clear acrylic, which is transparent at 445 nm and therefore uncuttable on a diode at any power, and which a CO2 laser cuts with a polished edge.

The 10.6 micrometre wavelength is absorbed by clear acrylic, which is the job a diode fundamentally cannot do. It also cuts thick wood faster and leaves a polished edge on acrylic that no diode produces.

A CO2 laser is not a better diode, it is a different tool. It emits at 10.6 micrometres instead of 445 nanometres, and that single difference is what lets it cut clear acrylic, glass mark, and work faster on thick organic material.

It also brings different hazards. The eyewear from your diode machine offers no protection here, the tube and optics need care, and the machine is heavier and less portable in every sense.

Why each item is on the list

The machine

Desktop CO2 laser: The 10.6 micrometre wavelength is absorbed by clear acrylic, which is the job a diode fundamentally cannot do. It also cuts thick wood faster and leaves a polished edge on acrylic that no diode produces.

Safety, not optional

CO2 laser safety glasses, 10600 nm rated: THIS IS A DIFFERENT PAIR FROM YOUR DIODE GLASSES. Eyewear rated for 445 nm gives zero protection against a CO2 beam, and eyewear rated for 10600 nm gives zero protection against a diode. If you run both machines you need both pairs, clearly labelled and kept with their machine.

Fire extinguisher: Within arm reach. A CO2 machine cuts faster and deeper, which means more energy into the material and a shorter path from flare up to fire.

Cutting performance

Air assist: Essential on thick stock and deliberately gentle on acrylic. Strong airflow across a molten acrylic edge frosts it and destroys the flame polished finish that is the main reason to cut acrylic on a CO2 machine.

The bed

Honeycomb bed: Supports thin and flexible stock flat, which matters more at this tier because focus tolerance is small and a sheet that bows loses focus mid cut.

Air quality

Fume extractor: Where venting outside is impossible, a multi stage extractor is the fallback. Be clear eyed about it: the carbon loads up and stops working with no warning, so treat the cartridge as a consumable on a real schedule.

Extraction fan: Venting outside beats filtering whenever it is physically possible, and a CO2 machine cutting acrylic produces fumes you do not want recirculated.

Capability

Rotary attachment: Glass and tumbler engraving is a CO2 strength, and the rotary is what makes cylindrical work possible at all.

Material

Cast acrylic sheet: Cast acrylic, not extruded. Cast cuts with a polished edge and engraves white and frosty; extruded melts differently and gives a poorer result on both counts.

Anodised aluminium blanks: Marking anodised aluminium is a reliable earner. A desktop CO2 will not mark bare aluminium without a coating, so anodised stock is the practical route.

Common questions

What does this laser build cost in total?

As listed it comes to under $1,500 across 10 items: catalog prices summed and rounded up, and prices move constantly, so the buttons show Amazon's current price. The figure is worth treating as the shape of the budget rather than a quote: the machine dominates it, and the consumables are what you will keep paying for afterwards.

Do I need to buy everything at once?

No, and on the laser side you should not spread it out arbitrarily. On a printing bench the machine and one spool get you started and everything else can follow. On a laser bench the eyewear, extraction and fire extinguisher belong in the first order, because leaving them for later means running the machine unprotected.

Why is there a separate ladder for lasers?

Because a 3D printing bench and a laser bench are genuinely different purchases. They share almost no consumables, their failure modes are unrelated, and their safety requirements are not comparable. Forcing both into one beginner to expert ladder would give bad advice to both buyers.

What should I not buy from this list?

The "what to skip" section on this page lists it explicitly, and it is the part worth reading twice. On a laser bench the safety items are the ones never to skip, while capability accessories such as a rotary attachment can always wait.
