The machine
Diode laser, higher power: More optical power means fewer passes and less charring, because the material spends less total time absorbing heat. An enclosed machine also contains the light, which makes the eyewear a backstop rather than the only defence.
Safety, not optional
Laser safety glasses, 445 nm rated: Matched to a diode machine at roughly 190 to 490 nm. If you later add a CO2 machine, these will not protect you from it and you will need a second pair rated at 10600 nm.
Fire extinguisher: Within arm reach of the machine. More cutting means more flare ups, and air assist reduces them without removing the need to stay in the room.
Cutting performance
Air assist pump: The biggest single quality upgrade available on a diode. It clears smoke off the lens so the beam is not attenuated, and blows debris out of the kerf so each pass reaches fresh material. Use low pressure on acrylic, where strong air frosts the cut edge.
The bed
Honeycomb bed: A larger panel that covers the full work area, so you are not repositioning the job around the edges of a small bed.
Air quality
Extraction fan: Sized for continuous cutting rather than occasional jobs. Aim for a full air change in the enclosure every six to ten seconds.
Ducting: Rigid where the layout allows, flexible only for the final connection. A fan rated in free air delivers well under that through a long flexible run with bends.
Capability
Rotary attachment: Turns cylindrical stock under the beam so tumblers, bottles and rolling pins become engravable. It is the accessory that opens the largest new category of work.
Material
Plywood stock: Buy in bulk once settings are dialled in. Plywood varies between sheets because the internal glue layers are uneven, so keep offcuts from each batch for testing.
Slate blanks: Slate marks beautifully on a diode and is the easiest route to a finished, sellable object. It is marked rather than cut, so results vary between individual pieces.

Do I need to buy everything at once?

Why is there a separate ladder for lasers?
